What is Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia can be a serious mental illness if it is not detected and treated at an early stage. It has a multifaceted appearance and belongs to the so-called “endogenous psychoses”. As psychoses, clinical pictures are summarized, which are associated, among other things, with loss of reality, delusions, disorders of thinking, speech and the emotional world.

The term “endogenous” means that the disease arises from a variety of factors “from within”, without recognizable physical causes and without a justifiable connection with experiences. Schizophrenic disorders are generally characterized by basic and characteristic disorders of thinking and perception, as well as inadequate or flattened affects. Clarity of consciousness and intellectual abilities, as a rule, are not impaired, although certain cognitive deficits may develop over time.

They hear voices that are not real, reflexively move and react extremely to other people. People who suffer from schizophrenia often meet many criteria of our classic prejudice of a madman. To this day, they also suffer from the stigmatization by our society.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder in which the thoughts and perceptions of those affected are altered. The feelings, the language, the experience of one’s own person and the perception of the environment also deviate greatly from the experience of healthy people. It is therefore difficult for them to cope with their everyday and professional tasks and to deal adequately with other people. Unlike many other mental health problems, those affected often do not notice and accept that they are mentally ill and often refuse treatment.

The term schizophrenia was coined at the beginning of the 20th century. The term, which comes from the Greek, is composed of the word parts schizo (= “columns”) and phren (= “mind” or “psyche”).
