What is Roe v. Wade

“Roe v Wade” is the name of a landmark decision of the US Supreme Court from 1973, in which the judges stated that it was the fundamental and constitutional right of women to decide on an abortion themselves. The existing laws of many states were overruled by this.

The right to abortion was divided into the trimesters of pregnancy: for the first trimester, restrictions were not allowed, in the second, at least, regulations on the protection of the mother could be required. Only from the beginning of the third trimester, the states were allowed to legally prohibit abortion – unless the mother’s life was in danger.
