The name Coachella, although it is also the name of a town in California’s Riverside County, usually refers to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The Coachella festival takes place once a year in the city of Indio, also in Riverside County. Coachella takes place on the last weekend of April. Since the first official Coachella festival in 1999, the event has gained popularity, so the two days originally planned for the festival have been extended to three days.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival takes place on the lawn of the Empire Polo Fields in Indio. On November 5, 1993, the alternative rock bands Tool and Pearl Jam performed at this venue in front of almost 25,000 fans. The Empire Polo Fields proved to be a suitable place for a big concert, despite the harsh desert heat of Indians and the distance to the big cities in California, Arizona and Nevada. Finally, the first official Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was held on October 9 and 10, 1999. The line-up included artists such as Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey, Rage Against the Machine, Jurassic 5 and DJ Shadow.
The Coachella Festival is back. It was canceled twice due to the corona pandemic, the last time the festival took place in 2019. But this year, music fans will once again be able to dance to the music of their favorite band for two weekends in the Californian desert. Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, The Weeknd: they will all perform from April 15 to 24, 2022 in Indio, California, near Palm Springs. Tickets for it cost more than 400 euros in advance. The organizers expect 100,000 fans this year.
