What is Acids

An acid is a chemical substance with certain properties. Acids taste sour, as the name says. They are found in nature in many places. Lemons, for example, contain a lot of acid, but also oranges, and even apples, pears and a lot of berries. They lose some of the acidity as they become more mature.

The first acid that man discovered was acetic acid. The vinegar we use in the kitchen, however, consists only to a small extent of acid. The bulk is water, with which the acid was diluted. In addition, there are tiny particles that are responsible for the smell and taste. Acetic acid is formed when bacteria convert the sugar in the fruit into alcohol. Other bacteria then turn the alcohol into an acid, namely vinegar.

The opposite of an acid is a base. Soaps and detergents, for example, are bases. If you combine an acid with the right base, the acid loses its strength. One then says: “It will be neutralized”. With water, it is not neutralized, but only diluted.

It depends on how strong the acid is in itself, and how much it is diluted with water. Vinegar or lemon juice, for example, is corrosive. On the skin, however, they usually hardly harm us. On the other hand, they burn in the eyes and can lead to damage. However, pure acetic or citric acid also scorches our skin.

Acids dissolve lime. This is useful if a white coating has formed in a pan or in a sink. This coating dissolves with vinegar or vinegar water. So you can get many things clean without detergents that would pollute the environment. However, at high concentrations, these acids also attack clothing or leather. A splash of vinegar can make the color on a shoe disappear. So caution is advised here.

Stronger acids, on the contrary, are very dangerous for us. One should not come into contact with them. If so, you have to rinse them vigorously with water. In no case should they be swallowed. They even attack metals. Only precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum defy all acids. In industry, metals are often freed from paint residues with an acid. Again, the concentration must be exactly right, so that in the end the metal does not suffer from the treatment.

Various foods are treated with phosphoric acid. Meat and sausage then retain their original color. Fat does not go rancid. Also, Cola drinks contain phosphoric acid. This is also why they are unhealthy, and not just because of the sugar. Phosphoric acid does not get to our gastric mucosa, because it acts as an acid caustic.

Our gastric mucosa produces its own acids. With it, the food is decomposed. This is one of the first steps of digestion. When we vomit or have to vomit, we feel in the mouth how acidic the contents of the stomach are. In summary, we simply call these acids “stomach acid”.

Also, ascorbic acid is indispensable for humans. We know them under the name vitamin C. We need them as a protection against colds and other diseases. Vitamin C is also an example of the fact that an acid does not necessarily have to be a liquid. It is a white powder.
