Liberalism is a political direction. Those who are liberal have certain thoughts about how people should live with each other. The expression comes from the Latin word for “free”. So the liberals want man to have a lot of freedom to do what he likes.
The first groups that called themselves liberal emerged in the years after 1800. The liberals wanted a lot to change in the world, that old laws were abolished. The conservatives, on the other hand, wanted everything to remain as it was. “Liberal” was more of an attitude, there were no real parties for a long time.
For some liberals, it is particularly important that few regulations are made to the people. Only that which would harm other people should be prohibited. Other liberals, on the other hand, are particularly interested in the economy: it should be easy to start a business, and people should have to pay little tax to the state.
In Germany, the Free Democratic Party is the most important liberal party. In Austria it is NEOS. Switzerland had several liberal parties, the oldest and largest being the Liberal Democratic Party. It is now called the FDP.liberal. Politicians from liberal cantons founded the Swiss federal State in 1848. The first Swiss Federal councillors, i.e. the members of the government, were all liberal.
